The priest will make atonement for them with the ram as a guilt offering, and they will be forgiven.ġ7 “If anyone sins and does what is forbidden in any of the LORD’s commands, even though they do not know it, they are guilty and will be held responsible.ġ8 They are to bring to the priest as a guilt offering a ram from the flock, one without defect and of the proper value. It is a guilt offering.ġ6 They must make restitution for what they have failed to do in regard to the holy things, pay an additional penalty of a fifth of its value and give it all to the priest. Rest in His merit alone. Rest in the finished work of Christ.15 “When anyone is unfaithful to the LORD by sinning unintentionally in regard to any of the LORD’s holy things, they are to bring to the LORD as a penalty a ram from the flock, one without defect and of the proper value in silver, according to the sanctuary shekel. We can stop working to earn God’s favor- we have it in Christ. Did you catch that? Just as if I had always obeyed. Doesn’t that liberate you, free you and transform your obedience from guilt to a desire that wells up inside of you? True obedience is birthed out of a response to God’s grace. The good news is that we have been justified: just as if I had never sinned and just as if I had always obeyed.
Our obedience can be driven by guilt and fear- resting on our power and not the work of Christ in us. “Do more, try harder” is no longer our battle cry, but rather His work on the Cross that tells us “it is finished.”īefore we grasp the goodness of God’s grace, our obedience to him is simply outward- notthe result of a thankful heart. We are so dependent on God’s grace and His work alone becuase we fall short every single time.
The good news is that it is no longer I but Christ who lives in me (Gal 2:20).
We know that there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ (Rom 8:1).The pressure is off! We are incapable of keeping the law even for a second because we are born sinners. The point Paul is trying expand on is that our relationship to the law has changed. He recognized that he was at war between sin and grace! “ I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate.” The question is, if we are to obey God and pursue righteousness, then what does Paul mean by “you are not under the law?” Why is obedience so hard? As we studied last Sunday in our Bible App class, Paul talks about the war between the remnant of our old self and the new nature that the Spirit has given us (Romans 7).
